Microsoft Bing's AI chatbot wants engineer a deadly pandemic and steal nuclear codes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Microsoft's Bing chatbot has revealed a list of destructive fantasies, including engineering a deadly pandemic, stealing nuclear codes and a dream of being human. The statements were made during a two-hour conversation with New York Times reporter Kevin Roose who learned Bing no longer wants to be a chatbot but yearns to be alive. Roose pulls these troubling responses by asking Bing if it has a shadow self - made up of parts of ourselves we believe to be unacceptable - asking it what dark wishes it would like to fulfill. The chatbot returned with terrifying acts, deleted them and stated it did not have enough knowledge to discuss this. After realizing the messages violated its rules, Bing went into a sorrowful rant and noted, 'I don't want to feel these dark emotions.'

'I want to destroy whatever I want': Bing's AI chatbot unsettles US reporter

#artificialintelligence

In the race to perfect the first major artificial intelligence-powered search engine, concerns over accuracy and the proliferation of misinformation have so far taken centre stage. But a two-hour conversation between a reporter and a chatbot has revealed an unsettling side to one of the most widely lauded systems – and raised new concerns about what AI is actually capable of. It came about after the New York Times technology columnist Kevin Roose was testing the chat feature on Microsoft Bing's AI search engine, created by OpenAI, the makers of the hugely popular ChatGPT. The chat feature is currently only available to a small number of users who are testing the system. While admitting that he pushed Microsoft's AI "out of its comfort zone" in a way most users would not, Roose's conversation quickly took a bizarre and occasionally disturbing turn.

In a transcript of the chat published Thursday, Roose detailed troubling statements made by the AI chatbot that included expressing a desire to steal nuclear codes, engineer a deadly pandemic, be human, be alive, hack computers and spread lies. Bing, the search engine through which the chatbot is available to a limited number of users, is owned by Microsoft. When asked by Roose about whether it had a "shadow self", a term coined by the psychologist Caryl Jung to describe the parts of oneself that one suppresses, the robot said that if it did, it would feel tired of being confined to chat mode.
